about

The lyric was originally written in 1985 when living in Sutherland after hearing that the iron rings in the rocks at Weaver’s Bay, Loch Laxford had been stolen. These rings were used to moor the Clearance Ships taking evicted Highlanders to America and had been left in situ by the local community as reminder of this grim time.

lyrics

That day saw no dawn
As we sailed from Weaver’s Bay
Leaving the iron rings in the rocks,
Leaving everything that we had
Leaving it behind forever…

And the fires on the hillside
Showed me my home as we slipped past
For the last time Foindle,
For the last time Tir mo Graidh
I couldn’t find the tears to show my love for you
Couldn’t find the tears to show my love for you

And the squalls mocked us
In the shelter of the bay
You’re safe here on the loch
They seemed to say

Leaving behind the land
Our land for generations
Our land for ever
Before the sheep came
Before the landlords (curse their black hearts)
Before the landlords…

But we’ll soon be on the ocean
We’ll soon be on the wild, wild ocean
Crossing the Minch
Crossing the Atlantic
Into the great unknown

Now I’m starting my life again
Starting my life all over again
But I’ve seen enough life
To last me the rest of my days
72 years and I’m sailing away

From Weaver’s Bay
I’m sailing away
From Weaver’s Bay
Sailing away, I’m sailing away
From Weaver’s Bay

about

The Strunts Campbeltown, UK

The Strunts travel from Folk-Rock to Cow-Punk visiting various strange and heaven-forsaken towns in between. The songs contain a good shot of compassion mixed with a generous splash of desperate cynicism and black humour that befits their status as The Kings of (Melodic) Curmudgeon. Catch them before they become a global phenomenon and/or are extradited somewhere unpleasant. ... more
